Top 5 Health Benefits of Coffee
Ahh, coffee! My favorite beverage of all time, and come to find out it actually has a lot of health benefits and not just from the caffeine. Although some benefits are connected to caffeine, if you’ve ever had to work a long shift at work, you may have used the magical black potion to help you get through it! So below are listed my top 5 health benefits of coffee (although there are more than that, these ones stand out as being awesome)!
Having a few cups of coffee a day provides some essential nutrients!
Yes, it turns out that each cup of coffee you drink provides small amounts of essential nutrients such as: Riboflavin (B2): (11% of the RDA), Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5): 6% of the RDA, Manganese: 3% of the RDA and Potassium: 3% of the RDA, Magnesium: 2% of the RDA, and Niacin (B3): 2% of the RDA. This is great, because drinking a few cups a day puts a nice dent in your daily recommended daily amounts needed for these nutrients. All that from a few good cups of joe!
Drinking coffee can lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
So, drinking coffee can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 67%. Considering the fact that over 300 million people in the world have type 2 diabetes, which for perspective is about the same as the amount of people that live in the United States!
There is a possible connection between coffee consumption and reduction in depression.
A Harvard study done in 2011 shows that there may be as much as a 20% reduction in the risk of being depressed, specifically in women. This is really good news considering that women are more at risk for depression. Anything that can work as a preventative measure for depression is great in my opinion!
Coffee can increase your metabolism!
There have been studies that show, partly because of the caffeine content in it, coffee can increase your metabolism by as much as 11%. Hey, I don’t know about you, but I will take any boost to my metabolism that is safe and effective. The amounts used in this study were only 200 mg of caffeine. This is only about 2 cups of homemade coffee or one medium/grande sized/16oz regular coffee from a coffee shop or Starbucks. That is a nice boost for a moderate amount of caffeine!
Coffee, thanks to caffeine, can help improve memory, cognitive function, and reaction times.
Thanks to the caffeine found in coffee, it can help with remembering information for a test, taking better notes in a meeting, and wake you up enough to pay attention if you’re not a morning person (the last one is an example I can list from my own life!). The reason is that the caffeine in coffee inhibits the neurotransmitter known as Adenosine, and because of this it is able to increase the firing of neurons via norepinephrine and dopamine. What this means is you are able to stay awake and be mentally sharper during times that you might otherwise feel tired or not mentally prepared.
All in all, these top 5 health benefits of coffee only scratch the surface of ways that coffee benefits your health! But as with anything, enjoy it in moderation and not before bed as sleep is also very important!
Of course, if you’ve followed my blog previously then you know my love for coffee runs deep, as I also named my dog Coffee even! Do you love coffee too? When did you start drinking it? Are you more of a tea person? Tell me about it in the comments!
